OH GIANT FLOWERS

Everyday I walk past the house

with the blue morning glories

covering the walls and the four sunflowers

growing in front, their tall stalks

bent over, and have to stop

and touch the dark centers

almost the size of a face.

It began the morning I awoke before you.

The blanket was wrapped tightly around you

and the sun came through the window

on your face. I couldn't stand

to see you that way. I looked outside.

The leaves red, yellow, and finishing.

A squirrel was in the yard rummaging for food

in the grass, the apple tree letting go

its bruised fruit; preparations had to be made.

How could you sleep with so much sun on your face?

When I left I didn't know where I was going.

There was so much color it seemed as if the whole

sky would ignite. The light loves the earth so much

it has to burn to prove it. Oh giant flowers,

when I came across you I wanted to bury my face

in your huge petals, I wanted to lie down

in the grass beneath you.
